Tarot Clarity – Mercury in Cancer – Two of Cups

Mercury in Cancer is a unique placement in the sign ruled by the Moon because it is the only heavenly body that has a faster apparent motion than the innermost planet. When Mercury is in Cancer, the emotional layer of the lightbody receives more stimulation than the mental. This brings feelings into a sharper focus, which makes them harder to control when they are more prominent than our thoughts, but can also be clarifying in the way that it influences us to communicate differently.

Mercury enters Gemini, home sign of the androgynous messenger, embodying the spirit of ideas, inspiration, cognition, and communication.

The Three of Cups is the card of the first crush, where our inner latent potential is activated by something or someone “other” causing a sudden explosive bloom of new feelings.

400 craters on Mercury are named after artists- writers, musicians, sculptors, painters- messengers of divine inspiration. The first spacecraft to enter orbit around Mercury was called MESSENGER, and at the end of its mission it crashed onto the planet, marking the surface on April 30th 2015, and on that same day Mercury entered Gemini.

Mercury in Gemini as the Three of Cups is whimsical yet volatile, creative and indecisive, curious and flirtatious, dangerous and fragile. Mercury leaving Aries and entering Taurus is a shift that encourages more processing between thinking and speaking. In Aries, Mercury uses words reactively and experimentally. In Taurus, Mercury learns to use words with intention and strategy. A high level of committment to intention and strategy during the learning process is at the root of what is commonly perceived as stubbornness.

The Queen of Cups is immersed in the world of emotion, completely in control of her experience. She shares the joys and sorrows of all the world. She stamps her feet in anger. She kneels in prayer. She luxuriates in the rhythms of the Heart.

Tarot Clarity – Mercury in Aries – King of Swords

In the sign of the Ram, the left brain planet of logic and reason is Self-centered- which is a righteous and enlightened stance of leadership when the Self is actualized… but true Self-actualization is rare, and it is easy to see why Aries is known for childishness and war.

What we consider to be logical depends on what we value, which is why Mercury gets so heated here. The fire of Aries increases the contrast of black and white in our personal values, which decreases our ability to sift through nuance and different perspectives, but also actually refines the purity of the passion and rage that arises in response to a perceived moral wrong.

The King of Swords is the ultimate master of the the intellect. He knows where he stands: morals and values, logic and reason, are flawlessly, impeccably united. He does not seek out arguments, ever. He doesn’t need to… When he stays centered in his Self, he is the brick wall where untruths splatter. Mercury in Aries as the King of Swords is a sharpened mind, on point and en garde.

Words can be the most effective and devastating weapons in existence when wielded with intention and skill. But when we weaponize the truth to establish dominance and superiority for our personal point of view, we create misery for ourselves. This is the warning of the dismayed face on the king’s right shoulder. The face on the left shoulder seems optimistic and content- this is the wisdom of knowing which battles to choose. It can be a difficult, life-long lesson for Mercury in Aries natives to learn that not everything that contradicts our values, requires us to intervene.
